Awards & Recognition
The SA Music Festival celebrates musical achievement at every stage of development. The following award levels are used to recognize and encourage participants based on their performance in each category
Platinum Award
90–100%
An exceptional, polished performance showing mastery and artistry.
Gold Award
80–89%
A confident, expressive performance with strong technique and musicality.
Silver Award
70–79%
A solid and promising performance with good effort and musical understanding.
Bronze Award
60–69%
A developing performance with potential. Encouragement to keep growing!
Performance Award
50–59%
Great effort! You're on your musical journey—keep practicing and exploring music!
These awards are designed to inspire continued musical growth and provide a positive, motivating experience for every participant. All adjudications are based on musical ability, stage presence, expression, and technical proficiency appropriate to the performer’s age and category.
SA Music Festival Adjudication Sheet
The following adjudication criteria will be used to assess each performance in the SA Music Festival. Performances are scored based on the following five key aspects, each contributing to the overall score. Each aspect is scored on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. The total score is then calculated by multiplying the score in each aspect by 2 to yield a final score out of 100.
Preparedness (Maximum 20 points)
Criteria: This category evaluates how well the performer has prepared their piece. Key factors include accuracy, confidence, minimal mistakes, and overall readiness. The adjudicator will assess how well the performer knows their music, with minimal reliance on reading or remembering the piece.
Artistic Expression (Maximum 20 points)
Criteria: This aspect focuses on how the performer interprets the music. It evaluates expressiveness, dynamics, phrasing, and overall emotional delivery. The adjudicator will consider whether the performer brings a unique emotional or artistic element to the piece, creating a deep connection with the audience through their performance.
Musicality & Technique (Maximum 20 points)
Criteria: This category combines the performer’s technical skill with their musicality. The adjudicator will assess the execution of the music, including pitch, rhythm, articulation, and how well the performer applies those technical aspects musically. The performer’s attention to musical detail and overall proficiency in the piece will be evaluated here.
Stage Presence & Engagement (Maximum 20 points)
Criteria: This category evaluates the performer’s connection with the audience and their confidence on stage. The adjudicator will assess the performer’s body language, eye contact, stage presence, and ability to captivate the audience. It focuses on how well the performer engages with the audience and conveys the performance’s energy and mood through their presence.
Communication & Interpretation (Maximum 20 points)
Criteria: This aspect assesses the performer’s ability to communicate the intent and message of the piece to the audience. It considers how well the performer interprets and conveys the meaning, style, mood, or narrative of the music. The adjudicator will evaluate whether the performer’s playing or singing communicates the emotional content and story of the piece effectively.
Scoring Guide
- 1-2 Poor: The performance showed significant areas of improvement needed across the category.
- 3-4 Fair: The performance demonstrated basic understanding, but there were noticeable areas for growth.
- 5-6 Good: The performance met expectations with some room for further development.
- 7-8 Very Good: The performance showed strong proficiency and a high level of execution.
- 9-10 Excellent: The performance was exceptional, demonstrating mastery, artistry, and complete musicality.
Final Scoring
- Each of the five aspects is scored out of 10.
- The total score for each aspect is multiplied by 2 to yield a final score out of 100.
Performance Notes
- Performances may not be longer than 5 minutes.
- Performers must provide their own instruments/props unless otherwise specified
